What we're doing to reduce our carbon footprint

Renewable energy: plants as sources of energy

We have decided to use waste materials from three medicinal and cosmetic plants as fuel for a biomass boiler installed at the Soual (81) production site.

This boiler is able to:

  • Recover 1,000 tons of plant waste per year, spanning 100% of the waste generated for the three selected plants
  • Substitute 60% of the factory's gas consumption with renewable energy
  • Reduce the Soual factory's carbon footprint by 1,600 tons of CO2 each year, which is a 5% reduction on the industrial site's GHG emissions

Industrial production and greenhouse gases

In order to map the main sources of industrial emissions, our company carried out a carbon assessment of its industrial and distribution sites. This undertaking allowed us to identify the corrective and preventive actions we needed to take, such as the implementation of industrial processes that emit less greenhouse gas (GHG).

  • Free Cooling
Expected result: reduction in CO2 emissions of almost 50 T per year.
  • Chillers
Expected result: : reduction in CO2 emissions of almost 1 T per year.
  • Electronic speed adjusters
Expected result : reduction in CO2 emissions of almost 9 T per year.
  • CTM (Centralized Technical Management)

We are certified ISO 14001 in environmental management for the pharmaceutical products manufacturing site in Pau, France, as well as for our three chemical factories: Gaillac (France), Virrey del Pino (Argentina) and Palézieux (Switzerland).

Transport: intelligent optimization on all levels

Our company has designed and developed concrete solutions in order to reduce its ecological footprint in terms of distribution channels, goods transportation, and staff travel.

  • Short supply chains: These are mostly local, in the Southwest of France, and use the services of local suppliers.
  • Combined deliveries: By systematically combining deliveries, we have reduced the number of monthly deliveries by 5,500.
  • Staff travel: Car pooling, public transport, the opening of an SNCF station, etc. These tangible actions have helped reduce our ecological footprint.

Agriculture: respect the Earth

The entire agricultural arm of the Pierre Fabre Group endeavors to perform well from an environmental point of view:

  • by implementing actions to promote respect for biodiversity,
  • by reducing or eliminating the use of pesticides,
  • by setting out management plans for soil fertilization
  • and by optimizing the use of water.

Tropical deforestation

Packaging and paper consumption are very important factors in deforestation. With full awareness of this, the Group has begun a series of actions which aim to reduce its impact. From our products to our employees' working tools, we are taking action on various levels :

Reducing and recycling our packaging

  • Eau Thermale Avène: reduction of 200 ml bottles by 5 g and 125 ml bottles by 3 g, elimination of opaque PET from its Pédiatril range
  • Ducray:  100% of secondary packaging and packaging leaflets of Ducray's Extra-Doux Shampoo are FSC-certified
  • Ducray and A-Derma: lightening of tube capsules by 35%
  • Klorane:  100% of shampoo bottles with 50% RPET
  • René Furterer: the base weight of large tubes for the brand has been reduced by 9%
  • Pierre Fabre Oral Care : the toothbrush bases have been reduced by 17 g
  • Medicines: maximum base weight reduction for medicine packaging made from cardboard

Reducing our paper consumption in our daily work...

  • Establishment of printers on a network and automatic double-sided printing on French sites.
    • Result : a reduction of almost 10% in paper consumption (8,865 reams of paper), which is equivalent to a 45 T reduction in CO2 emissions.
  • Implementation of paper sorting on most French sites
  • Provision of touch pads for medical representatives in France to inform GPs and/or specialists about our products.
  • Optimization of the letter, invoice and statement sending process. These documents are now grouped together in the same envelope and printed recto-verso.
    • Results: With savings of more than 1.4 million sheets and 200,000 envelopes, this action reduces our impact by an equivalent of 16 tons of CO2 per year.

Buildings: an experimental approach

The HEQ approach aims to improve the environmental quality of new and existing buildings. Within the Group, we took inspiration from the approach taken for residential buildings and implemented an experimental HEQ policy that can be applied to industry during the extension of our factories in Soual, Avène and Saint-Julien-en-Genevois (France).

Waste reduction and recovery

Reducing as well as recovering waste is an important element in our environmental respect policy.

                    • Recovering 92% of our waste
                    • Traceability of waste using a digital system
                    • Optimization of procedures
                    • Treatment of waste water using a membrane filtering procedure
                    • Development of new active ingredients using co-products from other affiliates to reduce the waste produced by our suppliers
                    • Optimization of waste reuse by our clients
